As Times-Picayune reporter Leslie Williams wrote: “New Orleans firefighters were able to quell a blaze in the 1500 block of Alvar St. in the 9th Ward Tuesday evening before it spread to an occupied double residence next door. The vacant single where the fire began and a connected commercial-type building were heavily damaged. Chris E. Mickal, acting deputy chief, said whatever was left standing of the structures would have to be demolished. He said firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in one hour and one minute. Only one side of the occupied double at 1523-21 Alvar was singed. No one was injured Mickal said. Sixty-five firefighters responded to the fire reported at 7 p.m.”
